Warm greetings to you.
St Mark's is an oasis in the busy heart of Remuera, on the edge of the Newmarket shopping precinct. We have been part of Auckland since 1847, when the first church was built on the site.
We are a Christian church in the Anglican tradition that aims to provide compassion, care and support to its members, the community of Remuera and the wider Auckland community. We strive every day to live out our Mission Statement: "To know Christ and to make Christ known."
We offer a range of activities and opportunities for fellowship and personal growth. Guided by the Holy Spirit, we support and encourage each individual to develop their own personal strengths and gifts through prayer, biblical study, discussion forums, participation in groups, and Christian action.
St Mark's has a wonderful church building and Parish Centre facility, both of which are used and enjoyed by many within the church and the wider community.
The liturgical new year is upon us in the season of Advent which runs from the 29th of November through until Christmas. Advent is a season of preparation and expectation for the coming of the Christ Child at Christmas. As with Lent, the other major time of
preparation in the Christian calendar, Advents liturgical colour is violet. Violet is the royal colour, signifying the sovereignty of God in Christ; some also suggest the colour violet is akin to the colour of the sky before dawn and so we wait, prayerfully and expectantly, for the new day
which comes when Christ was born. For us today, Advent is a chance to prepare afresh for the way in which Christ may come in and through our lives.
Christmas Day and the Christmas season which follow are the times of celebration which Advent prepares us for we are not preparing for nothing! Traditionally, this was the season of the Christmas (as opposed to Advent) Carols were sung with the joyous Twelve Days of
Christmas concluding at Epiphany when the Church remembers the coming of the Magi, or Wise Men, to the baby Jesus.
You are very welcome at St Mark's, whether it is to pray, to sit in quiet reflection, to visit just for a short time or to join our faith community and take part in the many services and other activities that happen here.
Peace to you and your families throughout this festive season,
The Reverend Peter Bargh
